Message from the Director:
Movement is a lifelong learning experience- from the first day we are aware of our movements on, we should continue a journey to be able to perform the most efficient movements with the least amount of energy…
I think back many years when I first started lifting weights. Back then my focus was on lifting as much weight as possible. When working biceps for example, I would throw my back backwards to generate enough force to lift the weights in the air, clench my face muscles as tightly as I possibly could, and hold my breath. After a long period of doing this, I wondered why my biceps weren’t getting any bigger, why I had tension headaches, tight masseter (chewing muscles), a sore back, and finally, why I really didn’t enjoy lifting.
Years later, I still lift weights. But from the various movement learning experiences I have had (teaching fitness classes, reading, studying Pilates, breathing, core training, and yoga), I feel I perform a bicep curl more efficiently. All parts of my body are stable, while only my biceps are moving. My face is relaxed and I breath correctly. I may not use as much weight, but I am more pleased with the results that I am getting. Lastly, I enjoy weight-lifting so much, that I use it as a means to reduce stress.
Continue to move and learn and have a wonderful 2004!
